Far-left protesters and their conservative counterparts at the University of Alabama (UA) found common ground in their dislike of President Joe Biden.
The moment of unity reportedly happened during a May 1 protest on UA campus grounds. At around 5:30 p.m. on that day, far-left protesters backing Palestine gathered at the institution’s Student Center Plaza. Soon after, counter-protesters supporting Israel showed up, according to footage shared by an editor at the university’s paper.
“F**k Joe Biden,” the far-left protesters chanted as Palestinian flags waved in the air. In response, the pro-Israel protesters chanted back: “F**k Joe Biden.” The footage of the exchange showing both sides uniting in their mutual disdain for the chief executive went viral on social media.
But the brief moment of anti-Biden unity quickly fizzled out, with the two sides returning to their respective messages against each other. The pro-Palestine protesters doubled down on their anti-Biden chants. Among their chants were: “Hey Israel, what do you say? How many kids did you kill today? Hey Biden, what do you say? How many kids did you kill today.”
The pro-Palestine group also chanted: “Hey hey, ho ho, Lockheed Martin has got to go,” “Ceasefire now” and “Free Palestine.” Meanwhile, the pro-Israel group sang the U.S. national anthem. Jewish UA students also joined the pro-Palestine demonstration, holding up “Jews Against Genocide” signs and joining calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
“Biden has received criticism from supporters of both Palestine and Israel,” Mediaite pointed out.
“Those in support of Palestine [accuse] the president of aiding Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in at least 35,000 deaths. Those in support of Israel, meanwhile, have accused Biden of not providing sufficient support to Israel’s offensive.”
According to WVTM 13, the May 1 pro-Palestine demonstration was organized by students with the UA Leftist Collective. The channel added that UA’s alleged ties to defense contractor Lockheed Martin and the Department of Defense (DoD) were the focus of the protest.
“As students of UA, we can no longer stand by in silent complicity as our institution funds a state-sponsored massacre of Palestinians,” the group said in a press release.
The press release added that UA’s board received $10.4 million in funding for the year 2022 from the DoD, per an audit from that year. It also alleged that the university has a “very close relationship” with Lockheed Martin. The Maryland-based defense contractor has reportedly supplied Israel with “fighter jets, Hellfire missiles and other weapons that are currently being used to slaughter Palestinians.”
Moreover, the press release also noted that in 2018, UA received $15 million in stock from then Lockheed CEO Marillyn Hewson. The university is listed as a partner institution of the company, and in turn allows the defense contractor to hold recruiting events on campus.
UA officials acknowledged the May 1 protest, releasing their own statement on the matter. “Protests were held on campus today by groups with opposing viewpoints. [UA] appreciates that attendees peacefully exercised their free speech rights with no disruptions, violence, vandalism or arrests,” they said in the statement. “University staff and [the UA Police Department] were on-site and shared expectations for a responsible, peaceful event along with clear guidance consistent with the law and university policy. The university maintains the authority to promptly address any violations. Enhanced security and other resources have been made available to students and groups who have expressed concern, and those resources remain available.”
